AN EVERYDAY ESCAPE: The Traditional Home NKBA Kitchen

For the National Kitchen and Bath Association's annual trade show, Robert Young, Traditional Home senior design and projects editor, and Indianapolis-based kitchen designer Janice Pattee designed the "Everyday Escape" kitchen for a beach house. This kitchen, suited for come-as-you-are entertaining as well as solitary contemplation, reflects casual seaside lifestyles and the muted palette of the Pacific Northwest. Colors, textures, and finishes are inspired by sand, seashells, driftwood, and water-natural elements that tend to soothe our souls.

A 7x4-foot island topped with DuPont Corian solid surface in a beach-inspired color of Sonora is the focal point of the kitchen, both visually and functionally. Three Panama bar stools in an all-weather, wicker-like synthetic fiber pull up to one side for quick meals or to allow for conversations with the cook. Behind the island is a Jenn-Air French-door-style refrigerator balanced by twin pull-out pantries.
