Giant shells are very stylish and can be used for a slew of decorating needs around the house. I can't think of any other piece that can so easily be a bowl, vase or bathroom sink or an elegant stand-alone piece. Whether you're using a resin shell or the real deal, large clamshells are a real catch.

For formal entertaining, put felt pads on the bottom of a large shell like this one from Ballard Designs and use it on the dining room table as a base for a one-of-a-kind candlelit centerpiece.

For a more casual look, fill your giant shell with a cheerful arrangement of blooms. Anchor the flowers in the center with the help of a floral frog or floral foam, and let the flowers rest in the large crevices of the shell.

If you have a particularly stunning shell, display it on a sideboard. Its natural beauty is unlike that of any man-made art, and it has an intrinsic understated elegance.

Margaret Donaldson Interiors found this authentic fossil shell at a showroom at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center.

A huge clamshell makes hand washing a special occasion and is a fantastic decorative touch for a powder room, or for any sink that's used only occasionally. Opt for dark cabinetry underneath to let the shell stand out.

Designer Dayna Katlin made this sink from a vintage shell she found at an antiques store. A marble fabricator drilled a hole for the drain, and she balanced it on the vanity with clear acrylic cubes.
